"Publish or perish" the phrase is familiar in academia. For many of us navigating this world, the road to professorship is marked by deadlines, data, drafts, and the constant demand to contribute new knowledge. It is a rewarding journey, but not an easy one especially when layered with the fast-paced rhythm of life, leadership duties, family responsibilities, and community involvement. Even in the midst of all these competing priorities, the call to publish remains ever-present.
In my preparation for a work trip to Salima, I knew I would have stretches of quiet time moments alone with my thoughts. So, I made a plan: use this time purposefully to focus on one of the research papers I have been working on. Not yet completed but what matters is that I showed up for the work, made time, created space, I was deliberate. And that is the point being strategically Intentional.
For academics, planned effort is everything. Writing does not just happen in the free spaces between meetings, lectures, or emails especially as life becomes more complex. It has to be scheduled and protected.
In addition to using work trips like this one for deep focus, I have carved out one day each week usually Thursdays, dedicated to writing. I avoid scheduling meetings or classes (unless absolutely necessary). It is sacred time for research for my field and reflection. This rhythm helps me stay aligned with my academic goals, without losing sight of my other responsibilities.
I have also been reminded of the value of writing retreats something I need to plan soon. There's something powerful about stepping away from the usual environments to immerse yourself in deep thinking and writing. They are not a luxury rather a necessity for sustained scholarly productivity.
Academic writing is not just about publishing for the sake of promotion. It’s about contributing to knowledge, influencing our fields, and shaping how future scholars think, research, and engage. This takes discipline, planning, and determination.
To my fellow academics: as life gets busier and responsibilities increase, let us remain committed to this journey. show up not just when it is convenient, but because we know it matters.
